Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:
1) Fill in the blanks with correct Simple Past Tense.
2) Write a paragraph / 2 paragraphs describing about an accident using Simple Past Tense.
Teaching Resources/Materials:
Photostat text based material (modified newspapers cutting ), A4 paper, worksheet A and B, handout, a flow chart, PowerPoint presentation.
Previous Knowledge:
1) Pupils read about the accident on recent newspaper.
2) Pupils had learnt about Simple Present Tense before.
3) Pupils had learnt how to write a short description.

Lesson Development Stage 1 Introduction / Presentation (10 minutes ) FORM | Simple Past Tense Rules -action that happened in the past. -at a specific time in the past. -yesterday, last night, last Monday. Set of questions : 1. What can you see in the first slide? CAR CRASHED 2. Use one verb to describe what happen to the vehicle in slide 2 and 3. CAR SKIDDED CAR BURNED 3. Use one verb to describe the people in the slide 4 ,5 and 6. PEOPLE FAINTED PEOPLE INJURED PEOPLE KILLED 4. What are the people trying to do? THEY HELPED 5. Describe what did the doctor do in slide 8 HE TREATED THE PATIENT | 1. Teacher projects 5 accident scenes using power point presentation. 2. Teacher provides a set of questions to the pupils and asked them to talk about the accident in groups of five. 3. Teacher instructs the pupils to give their answers ( action verb) then lists down all the verbs given by pupils ( Simple Past Tense ) on the board. 4. Teacher then explains the rules of Simple Past Tense explicitly. 5. Teacher asks more questions to elicit more past actions from the pupils. E.g. How did you come to school? What did you do on last Friday? Where did you keep you pet? 6. Stage 2 Structured Practice (30 minutes) MEANING | Photostat newspaper reports A4 paper Handout A set of questions 1. Where did the car accident happen? 2. What other vehicle was involved in the accident? 3. What time did it happen? 4. How many people injured and died in the accident? 5. Who came and helped the victims? 6. Where did the victim being sent? A flow chart. Worksheet A Fill in the blanks with simple past tense Worksheet B Fill in the blanks with correct simple past tense ( choices given ) | 1. Teacher distributes some photostat ( modified newspaper reports) reports from local news paper about an accident to the pupils. 2. Teacher instructs the pupils to underline all the simple past tense in the reports. 3. Pupils are asked to read aloud then listed down all the simple past tense on given A4 paper. 4. Then, teacher distributes some handout (a set of questions ) to the groups. 5. Pupils in groups of 5 are asked to discuss about the accident according to the given questions. 6. Pupils are instructed to write down the sequences of the event happened using a flow chart. 7. Teacher reminds the pupils all the verbs are in past tense form. 8. A representative from each group comes forward to present their work. 9. Teacher monitors and assists pupils along the learning process. 10. Teacher then distributes 2 worksheets, A and B to mix abilities pupils according to their levels. 11. Teacher briefly explains the task. 12. Teacher monitors and assisting the low proficiency pupils to complete the worksheet B. 13. Stage 3 Production USE (15 minutes) | An interview newspaper reporter and police officer | 1. Teacher wants the pupils to work in pairs to conduct an interview. 2. The interview is between a newspaper reporter and a police officer in the police station. 3. Teacher says : Firstly, Recall what you have seen on the slides and what you have read on the newspaper report just now. Use the set of questions given earlier, conducts an interview. Then, write down all the result (description about the accident ) in 2 paragraphs. Thirdly, Remember all your tenses must be in the past form. Fourthly, the description must be in correct sequence. 4. For the low proficiency, the pupils are asked to conduct the interview then write down the description in one paragraph by answering the sets of questions. 5.
